The McWorters

The Family who founded the town

A woman named Judah was taken from Africa and forced into the institution of slavery in the South in the United States. She gave birth to a son, Frank, in 1777 in Virginia. The father was most likely their owner, George McWhorter. Frank proved to be a hardworking, intelligent, and honest man, so George trusted him with the responsibility of one of his farms. Frank was also allowed to hire his own time and keep savings. In 1819, Frank's wife Lucy was pregnant. Frank had enough money to buy her freedom in time for their son to be born free.
